Physics Colloquium : "From Deep Underground to Deep Space: Unveiling the Nature of Dark Matter"

- Lecturer: Tomer Volansky, TAUAbstract:The existence of dark matter is supported by overwhelming astrophysical and cosmological evidence, yet its fundamental nature remains one of the most pressing open questions in physics. In recent years, the search for dark matter has expanded significantly, reaching into previously unexplored regions of parameter space. In this talk, I will discuss current and emerging strategies to probe dark matter both terrestrially and through indirect astrophysical signatures. Special attention will be given to light and ultralight dark matter candidates, which have garnered increasing theoretical motivation and experimental interest. I will provide a brief overview of the current landscape and highlight promising new directions that may bring us closer to uncovering the true identity of dark matter.

- Title:An independent search for small long-period planets in Kepler data. Abstract:Kepler spacecraft provided an unprecedented photometric precision aimed to find Earth-like planets. However, estimating the occurrence rate of such planets remains a challenging task due to the low reliability of the Kepler catalog for candidates with low signal-to-noise. In our work, we address one of the main reasons for this issue: the inability to distinguish faint signals from the false alarms originating from the correlated and non-gaussian noise.We developed an independent search and vetting pipeline aimed at constructing a more reliable catalog of smalllong-period planets. Our pipeline implements precise statistical methods similar to the ones used in gravitational wave searches. It takes into account the correlations and the non-gaussianity of the noise and provides a prior-informed detection score with a controlled background distribution.In my talk, I will present the key methods of the search pipeline and describe its performance. Then, I will present the catalog of planetary candidates detected by the pipeline that will be used in the future to re-evaluate the occurrence rate.Oryna will be available after the seminar and talk to everybody who is interested.Contact: Zhiyuan Yao

Nonlinear Physics Seminar: "Multi-level ecosystem response to drying climate trends"

  Abstract:
  Climate change and the development of drier climates threaten ecosystems’ health and the services they provide to humans. Understanding ecosystem response to drier climates may provide clues on improving their functioning and resilience. This response is likely to involve mechanisms operating at different levels of ecological organization. At the single-plant level, phenotypic changes can occur; at the population level, spatial patterns can form; and at the community level, community reassembly and biodiversity changes may take place. These mechanisms must affect one another, as stress relaxation by one mechanism weakens the driving forces of other mechanisms, but complex ecosystem responses involving coupled mechanisms have hardly been studied. In this talk I will focus on the interplay between phenotypic changes and spatial patterning and between spatial patterning and community reassembly. Using mathematical models of water-limited plant communities, I will show that incorporating phenotypic plasticity into vegetation pattern-formation theory can resolve two outstanding puzzles associated with the fascinating Namibian fairy circle phenomenon and describe a predicted buffering effect of spatial patterning on community composition along rainfall gradients. Possible implications of these results to ecosystem functioning in stressed environments will be discussed.
