- Speaker: David Barba-Gonzalez (Universidad de Salamanca, Spain)Title: Realistic simulations of relativistic plasmas, astrophysical implications and multimessenger constraints on the nuclear equation of stateAbstract:In this seminar, I will give an overview of results produced by the Astroparticle and Nuclear Astrophysics Group at the University of Salamanca, within the context of my PhD thesis. In the first part, I will describe our Molecular Dynamics (MD) code capable of realistically simulating relativistic, fully-ionized plasmas in neutron stars and white dwarfs interiors. I will explain how transport and elastic properties are relevant for gravitational wave physics, and the importance of realistically characterizing the electrostatic sector of the crust Equation of State (EoS) at finite temperature. Secondly, I will discuss our contributions to constrain the Nuclear Equation of State from multimessenger signals from kilonovae. Ejected matter radioactively powers the electromagnetic emission, which contains critical information about size, compactness and tidal deformability of the binary stars. - Lecturer: Prof. Guy Ron and Prof. Hadar Steinberg (HUJI)Abstract:Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS) is a spectroscopic technique thatmakes use of positrons impinging on a material sample to perform ultra-sensitive spectroscopic measurement of the defect concentration (and types)and chemical environment in a material.If this talk we will present the basic methodology behind PAS, as well as de-scribe the SPOT-IL positron facility at the Hebrew University, which consistsof two independent and complimentary measurement setups. We will further describe our advances in graphene-based positron charge sensors, and their potential in probing positron transport. We will outline our vision for future applications of PAS-based local probes.

- Speaker: Dr. Sahar Shahaf (Department of particle physics and astrophysics, Weizmann Institute of Science)Title: The Hunt for Invisible StarsAbstract:Most known stellar black holes are members of close binary systems, where accretion-fueled X-ray emission triggered their detection. However, if the separation between the two components is sufficiently large, the accretion rate drops, leaving the black hole in quiescence. Presumably, most compact objects in binaries reside in this dormant state, waiting to be discovered. The hunt for dormant black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs poses a long-standing challenge but holds key insights into the physical mechanisms governing stellar and binary evolution.A unique opportunity to overcome these challenges was recently presented by Gaia, a space observatory monitoring over a billion stars; it has revolutionized astronomy by accurately measuring their positions, distances, motions, and colors. By identifying binary orbits, Gaia has enabled the detection of thousands of stars accompanied by white dwarfs, dozens accompanied by neutron stars, and three with an unambiguous black hole as their faint, massive companion. In this talk, I will describe the search methodologies used to detect these systems and the potential of empirical studies of their populations.
