Seminar Quantum Center:"Demonstration of algorithmic quantum speedup"

- Lecturer: Prof. Daniel Lidar, Viterbi Professorship of Engineering at the University of Southern CaliforniaAbstract:Despite the development of increasingly capable quantum computers, an experimental demonstration of a provable algorithmic quantum speedup employing today's non-fault-tolerant devices has remained elusive. In this talk, I will report on the first two demonstrations of such a speedup, quantified in terms of the scaling of time-to-solution with problem size. The first demonstration is based on the single-shot Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm, which efficiently solves the problem of identifying a hidden bitstring that changes after every oracle query. We implemented this algorithm utilizing two different 27-qubit IBM QPUs. The second demonstration, using 127-qubit IBM QPUs, is based on the restricted Hamming weight Simon’s problem, which likewise efficiently solves the problem of identifying a hidden bitstring encoded into an unknown periodic function. The speedups are observed when the computation is protected by dynamical decoupling — an open-loop quantum control protocol designed to suppress noise due to the environment — but not without decoupling. In contrast with quantum supremacy demonstrations, the quantum speedup reported here does not rely on complexity-theoretic conjectures. Time permitting, I will report on the first demonstrated speedup in quantum optimization using D-Wave's quantum annealers, where custom quantum error-detecting codes prove essential for maintaining the quantum advantage.References:PRL 130, 210602 (2023)arXiv:2401.07934arXiv:2401.07184

- Speaker: Dr. Ido Irani (Department of Particle Physics and Astrophysics, Weizmann Institute of Sciences, Rehovot, Israel)Title: Early UV-optical observations of supernovae and what they tell us about the last moments in stellar evolutionAbstract:In my talk, I’ll discuss how UV-optical observation of supernovae very early (<3d) in their evolution can inform us about their progenitor stars and the explosion itself. I’ll start by showing how in Type II supernovae, the early UV-optical light curve can be used to map out the density profile of the progenitor before explosion. I’ll show this for the very well-observed case of the M101 SN2023ixf, and discuss what can be learned from a sample of SNe II from the ZTF survey with early UV data. Using this sample, I will argue that while most SNe II have a shell of dense CSM affecting the UV-optical light curve, this is due to a luminosity bias, and up to 80% of red supergiant stars result in a supernova shock breakout from the stellar envelope itself. During the second half of my talk, I will discuss ongoing instrumentation efforts at the Weizmann Astronomical Observatory. In particular, I will present the Weizmann Multi Aperture Spectroscopic Telescope array, and DeepSpec - its dedicated broad-band r~650 spectrograph with multiplexing capabilities. MAST/DeepSpec is capable of either acting as a single 2.7m telescope or multiplexing over the entire sky using smaller flexible groups. This approach will make the combination of MAST/DeepSpec a unique facility worldwide in terms of its low cost, flexibility, and efficiency, capable of observing up to hundreds of targets per night spread over large areas. I will describe the impressive progress of high resolution near-infrared and radio imaging and interferometry, and of precision measurements of gravitational waves in the Galactic Center and other galaxies.
