The majority is born with a close binary companion or even more than one. The lives of massive stars are thus not simply that of single stars in isolation (as our models and textbooks still often assume). Interactions will affect the majority of massive stars by stripping, mass gain, and mergers. This changes their lives and final fates. — If binary stars are indeed so common, then where are the binary products? — In this talk, I will highlight our recent work searching for stars stripped by binary interaction, our plans to search for stellar mergers, and discuss the implications for our interpretation of core-collapse supernovae.Contact: Assaf

  The first direct detection of Gravitational Waves brought great excitement among physicists and astrophysicists alike. Especially the high masses, about 30 times that of the sun, were unexpected, being well above any of the stellar-mass black holes known in X-ray binaries. To date, we have 90 significant detections with published parameters. In this Lecture, I will invite you to relive some of the excitement felt by stellar astrophysicists. For us, the neutron stars and black holes responsible for the detections are the fossils of very massive stars, that are still poorly understood. These massive stars nearly always come in binary systems. They are rare and live short-lived, yet they played a disproportionate role in transforming the pristine Universe left after the Big Bang into the modern Universe as it is today. — In this lecture, I will discuss what gravitational wave detections teach us about massive stars' lives and fates. I will touch on the main formation scenarios and emphasize for an alternate pathway through chemically homogeneous evolution. I will further discuss the deep significance of pair-instability supernovae and the prospect that we may learn about nuclear physics or sources that are not of stellar origin.

Nonlinear Physics Seminar: "Beyond Willis Materials: Trianisotropy and the Electromomentum Effect"

- Lecturer: Prof. Gal Shmuel, TechnionAbstract:By developing and applying a homogenization scheme for elastodynamics, Willis discovered that the momentum of composite materials is macroscopically coupled with their strain. This coupling is captured by the now-termed Willis tensor, which not only enlarges the design space of metamaterials, but is also necessary for obtaining a meaningful effective description that respects basic physical laws. In this talk, I will show how additional tensors of Willis type emerge by generalizing the homogenization theory of Willis to thermoelastic-, piezomagnetic- or piezoelectric media. As a result, the obtained effective constitutive equations have a tri-anisotropic form. I will provide continuum and discrete models for piezoelectric media that exhibit an effective electromomentum coupling. I will show that this coupling is necessary for describing the effective properties of piezoelectric media using a homogenized description that respects reciprocity and energy conservation. Finally, I will demonstrate how this coupling can be used to realize a device that actively control the phase of elastic waves.

- The State of Cosmic Ray Transport Theory
  
  Cosmic rays are an energetically important component of the interstellar medium of galaxies and likely of the circumgalactic medium and intracluster medium. The correct treatment of cosmic ray dynamics in these environments is one of the biggest theoretical uncertainties in galaxy formation. Observations show that cosmic rays are confined to the Milky Way for a lifetime much longer than the light-crossing time across the galaxy, implying efficient scattering by small scale fluctuations in the magnetic field. The origin of this scattering is a long-standing theoretical puzzle. In this talk I will describe theoretical progress on understanding the origin of the scattering that regulates cosmic ray transport.
