- Lecturer: Adi Ashkenazi (TAU)Abstract:The ability of next generation accelerator based neutrino oscillationmeasurements, such as DUNE, to reach their desired sensitivity andprovide new insight into the nature of our Universe, requires ahigh-level of understanding of the neutrino-nucleus interactions.These include precise estimation of the relevant cross sections andthe reconstruction of the incident neutrino energy from the measuredfinal state particles. Incomplete understanding of these interactionscan skew the reconstructed neutrino spectrum and thereby bias theextraction of fundamental oscillation parameters and searches for newphysics.The Tel Aviv Neutrino Group aims to improve and constrainneutrino-nuclei interaction models and their uncertainty estimation.By exploiting the similarity of electron- and neutrino-nucleusinteractions, we leverages wide phase-space exclusive electronscattering data with known beam energies as well as neutrinoscattering data in the same energy region and on similar nucleartargets, to test energy reconstruction methods and interaction models.In addition we explore the possibility to detecting neutrons in LiquidArgon detectors to ensure we account for their energy.

Bio Physics Seminar: "The contribution of division-positioning proteins to cell size regulation in bacteria"

- Lecturer: Prof. Hanna Salman, University of Pittsburgh Abstract:Cell size is an important factor for survival, that microorganisms tune to their environmental needs.Nevertheless, all microorganisms exhibit large heterogeneity in cell size even when experiencinghomogenous environmental conditions. This heterogeneity is in part due to the stochastic nature of thecomplex processes that control cellular growth and division dynamics. It is also limited by cellularmechanisms that operate in concert to prevent size divergence over time. In this talk, I will discuss thecontribution of one of these mechanisms, namely the Min proteins, to cell size regulation in the bacterialmodel organism E. coli. The Min proteins interactions and diffusion within the cell create oscillationsalong the cell’s length that aid in the formation of the division ring at mid-cell. Previously, it was assumedthat the Min proteins’ function is limited to the localization of the division ring along the cell’s long axis.However, the dynamical pattern of these oscillations is sensitive to the cell length, which allows the Minproteins to coordinate the initiation time of the division ring formation with the cell length and as aresult can help regulate cell size. Our results reveal how the pattern of the Min proteins oscillationschange with cell size and how that determines the timing of division ring formation and ultimately cellsize at subsequent divisions. The contribution of the Min proteins to cell size regulation is one thatenables a cell born smaller than its sister during the “supposedly” symmetric division, to grow more andcompensate for the size difference acquired during division. This ensures that cell size is tightly regulatedand maintained within a physiologically viable range.
